For a city that is trying to compete for tourism and international events to come to us, situations like this give us a horrible reputation. WA has gained the nickname of "Wait Awhile" due to situations like there where all planning and logic goes out the window.

I do not believe I will attend another event at Belmont Racecourse due to this experience and I strongly believe that I am not alone in this decision.

Today, April 30th, I attending the Cirque Du Soleil show at 1:30pm. The show itself was spectacular but getting there and getting out was a nightmare. The problems began when we attempted to access the parking located on site at the Belmont Racecourse. As someone who has never parked at the Belmont Racecourse before, it was an extremely confusing and stressful time trying to find access into the parking lot. The turn off was block with cones and a single sign which read something along the lines of "Cirque Du Soleil Event. Please continue straight". With no indication that access to the parking lot was straight ahead, we were under the impression that parking was closed as we were an hour and a half early. We did a loop around to try and figure out what was going on with no success. On a whim, we drove straight ahead and saw a single yellow detour sign about 1km up the road. 1 single detour sign to indicate the entrance to the parking lot at a major event is absolutely inadequate.

Cirque is always great to see live. The pathetic parking arrangements for exiting, another matter completely.

Facilities are a little old and tired but kept clean and tidy. A good day out watching the racing during Winter.

We managed to make it to the parking lot without much hassle from there. The lack of signage could have been forgiven if it weren't for the nightmare that was leaving the venue after the show. The parking lot was absolute chaos with hundred of cars trying to leave at the same time. After about 15 minutes, we managed to leave the parking lot (which was all of 500 metres). This is understandable as lots of vehicles leaving at once does cause congestion but when we got to the roundabout it was a different story. The traffic lights had been altered so that we had a red light permanently. There were at least 3 traffic controllers standing at the lights but they were doing absolutely nothing. They had placed their stop/slow signs on the ground and were just standing there. We waiting at the roundabout for approximately 30 minutes without moving at all. Now, I completely understand that people trying to get into the event so that they didn't miss it is more important than getting the cars out from the first showing of the day but not having ANY traffic moving from 1 direction for over 30 minutes is absolutely inexcusable. Most cars had people get out and ask the traffic controllers why we were not able to move. Some of these people became very irate and aggressive. The traffic controllers were put in a horrible situation and were verbally abused for doing as they were told. An excellent solution would have been for them to let 1 car exit for every 5 or 10 cars going straight or some other solution. Not letting people exit after an event is not a solution. The only way we were even able to leave was that a random civilian risked his life and stood in front of the oncoming traffic to allow us and many other cars to leave. I can only imagine how much longer we would have been stuck there in our cars if it wasn't for this loan man standing up for us. For this to be needed to be done is incredibly horrible event planning, road planning, logic and forethought.

How is the Belmont Racecourse supposed to host international events when they can't even get cars out of a parking lot?
